Set in York in 1392, this play tells of the annual performance of the Mystery Plays, the highlight of the year for all involved. But this year is exceptional, the King himself – Richard II – is in town with his lovely and tragically barren wife, Anne, and their close friend the recently banished Earl of Oxford.

For the dignitaries of York the competition to attract the attention of the Royal party is fierce. But the message of the Mystery cycle as performed by the labourers, is strong, clear and truthful and Richard, Anne and Oxford are enraptured. This remarkable and beautifully written play is highly original, often very funny and ultimately deeply moving.
