The First Fleet of 11 ships, containing 756 convicts (564 male, 192 female), 212 officers and men of the Royal Marines and their families, set sail from Portsmouth on 13th May 1787, destined to become Australia's first settlers. Eight months and one week later they arrived in Botany Bay but, finding it unsuitable, they moved north to Port Jackson, renamed Sydney Cove after the Home Secretary. 2nd Lieutenant Ralph Clark decided to stage a production of 'The Recruiting Officer'....
